Aunt Erica Visits Austin

Aunt Erica came to Austin during her spring break. She was very busy while she was in town, going to many movies and events during the South by Southwest festival. One day she took a break to join Dahlia and her parents for a day of seeing the sights.

Their first stop was Lockhart, Texas, where they enjoyed some good old-fashioned Texas BBQ at Smitty's Market. It wasn't fancy (or child-proofed!), but it sure was tasty:

After Dahlia and her mom took a nap in the car, their next stop was San Antonio. Dahlia enjoyed a stroll along the Riverwalk:

No trip to San Antonio is complete without a stop at the Alamo. Some people are struck by the history of the place. Dahlia was captivated by the koi pond. She spent more than half an hour standing guard over the koi. It was an educational experience, as Dahlia learned how to say "wheesh" (fish). She has actually developed quite an animal-friendly vocabulary. Some of her other favorites are "bir" (bird), "moo," "baa," "meow," "offf" (woof), and "an" (the neighbor's dog Annie).

While Erica was in Austin, she and Kaori went to the rodeo. One of the most amusing events is something called "mutton busting," which is where five- to seven-year-olds "ride" sheep as they prepare for their future rodeos. Maybe Dahlia will join in on the fun in a few years...
