Southern California

As the end of December approached, Dahlia and Jonah got ready for the annual Yamada Family Vacation. This year, everyone was meeting in Los Angeles for a Mexican cruise. Dahlia and Jonah didn't want to miss any of the action, so they arrived in California a few days early to see the sights.

It didn't take long for Dahlia and Jonah to make some new friends in California. Yogi Bear seemed very happy to see them:

Dahlia also made fast friends with some of her mom's favorite friends from business school, Marina and Vanessa. Vanessa was a big hit with Dahlia, showing her all the great things at the Grove (a shopping mall in Los Angeles).

Peering into a telescope to see the stars:

Here they're admiring a very big Christmas tree. To Dahlia it was just a big tree and she couldn't figure out why it had so many decorations. This trip made Dahlia's parents realize just how little she knows about Christmas. At one point on their cruise, they walked past an ornate Christmas display. While other children oohed and aahed at Santa Claus and his reindeer, Dahlia excitedly proclaimed, "Look, Mommy and Daddy! It's a clown!"

Frosty the Snowman, on the other hand, was a familiar face:

After their lunch date in Los Angeles, it was time to unite with the entire Yamada clan. Jonah was delighted to see his obaachan again, and settled in for a delicious dinner...

...while Dahlia got to reunite with her beloved cousin Eli. Even though they hadn't seen each other in a few months, they were running around like best friends (and maniacs) within minutes:

The next morning, everyone went to Legoland:

Of course, it didn't Dahlia long to figure out where the best rides were:

Is Dahlia waving to her fan club or just pointing out that she and her dad are higher than Uncle Dan and Cousin Eli?

While the older cousins went on rides, their younger siblings watched. Clearly Jonah was more enthusiastic about the experience than was his cousin Evi. Maybe Evi just wanted to sit in Ojiichan's lap too:

Once Evi found things that were at her own height, she was much happier with her Legoland experience:

Jonah may have been too small for most of the rides, but that didn't stop him from reading the map and letting everyone else know where they should go. He also thought that the guide was delicious!

One of the highlights of Legoland was a firetruck ride where teams competed against one another. Dahlia and Eli cheered on her dad and his mom as they worked hard to keep pace with the other teams. It was a valiant effort and a great time:

They didn't win the race, but everyone enjoyed being a firefighter for a few minutes:

One of the other highlights of Legoland was the world's longest line. After waiting and waiting and waiting, everyone took a ride on a lego train. It was not worth the wait:

There were so many rides! Dahlia and Eli teamed up to steer one of them, while Dahlia took a turn leading a different train around the track:

Even Jonah got in on the action, with a little help from his mom:

"This was a fun day, Daddy! I had a great time at Legoland!"
